You'll Need:
1 clean, empty wide-mouthed glass jar
1 pencil
1 paperclip
Tape
Cotton string
Sugar (lots of it)
1 cup water
(Food coloring optional)
Directions:
1.
Cut a piece of string that's about a foot long and tie the paperclip to one
end of it. Tie the other end of the string tightly around the middle of the
pencil.
2. Moisten the string that's tied to the pencil and sprinkle some sugar on
it. Put the pencil on top of the glass jar so that the string hangs inside.
Roll the string up around the pencil until the paperclip just touches the
bottom of the jar and tape the string in place.
3. Pour the water into a saucepan and heat to a rapid boil. Add two cups of
sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Keep adding sugar until
no more will dissolve. Remove from heat.
4. Pour the sugar solution into the jar. Leave the jar undisturbed for
several days, and you'll see pretty candy crystals form on the string!
